Our Story

My sugar babies story starts off with my oldest grandson Jr. who at the age of 2 ½ in late October had become increasingly thirsty with frequent trips to the bathroom. He was becoming a picky eater & losing weight more and more every day, then the throwing up started, of course no fever. We just thought maybe he had too much candy on this day which happened to be Halloween / Trick or Treat. Until a few days later it all came to a head, with him being found unconscious in the bathroom.  Jr. was rushed to the emergency room by ambulance still unconscious. Many test were ran, finally the blood test results came in. With those three words TYPE 1 DIABETIC and being transferred to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, which for us is a 2 hour drive.  This beginning our lives with Type 1 diabetes.
I keep questioning myself why didn’t I pick up on the signs? It’s not like I didn’t know about diabetes it runs full on full in my family. My mother, my Grandmother, my Aunts, my Uncles all Type 2 Diabetics. But with this, of all that should have given me a hint is my niece who was diagnosed Type 1 at only 10 months of age.  I think now looking back on this I quickly dismissed the possibility and in hopes it wasn’t true.

A lot of question did follow of course, due to having another grandchild who at the time was just three weeks old. We were assured by the doctors that Diabetes in sibling is 2 – 5% chance of being very low.

We will fast forward 2 years later with my youngest grandson Dra.  I noticing he was showing signs of weight loss in a short period of time, frequency urination, and being very irritable.  I checked his sugar on and off for a few weeks, of course with each poke hoping for good readings. Of course not the numbers I wanted to see so a visit to our local pediatric. In less than 15 minute she was back with the positive reading for Type 1 diabetes.  With this we were on our way to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.  So within 36 hours we were on our way back home with our supplies and the start of our journey with My Two Sugar Babies.  Oh, just a quick note, I’m the boy’s grandmother, I have had full custody now for 5 years.

I’m married to a great man who has been my rock. I'm a mother to 4 fully grown children, (two boys and two girls). At the time I received full custody of my two oldest grandchildren (Jr. and Dra) my youngest child was graduating High School and Jr. was starting Kindergarten. So yes I was starting all over again. With this blog I will share our experiences with diabetes and in hopes to swap notes with other people just like our family.  I feel I've learned a lot on my journey and believe those lessons can be put to some use to help others. I do still work full time; there could be times I’m not on as much as I would love to be.  The beauty of the human spirit is that it is so strong; it can overcome almost anything.

Sending smiles to you and yours, from me and mine.
